My Carbonite (www.carbonite.com) online backup program has been working well since I installed it a couple of months ago but then, suddenly, I began to get “cannot connect” messages when trying to alter my settings or view the control panel. Carbonite uses Internet Explorer for this purpose and, it turns out, the problem is due to the “hosts” files within Windows Vista breaking so that the localhost address of 127.0.0.1 is garbled.
