Carbonite problem, Microsoft’s fault

by Kevin Partner on 15th April, 2009

My Carbonite (www.carbonite.com) online backup program has been working well since I installed it a couple of months ago but then, suddenly, I began to get “cannot connect” messages when trying to alter my settings or view the control panel. Carbonite uses Internet Explorer for this purpose and, it turns out, the problem is due to the “hosts” files within Windows Vista breaking so that the localhost address of 127.0.0.1 is garbled.

To fix:

  1. find the hosts file in C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and open it in notepad.
  2. Delete all text.
  3. Add the line: 127.0.0.1 localhost to the top. This should now be the only line in the file
  4. Save and reboot.

That should sort it.

Thank you! Worked a dream (no reboot needed) and so much simpler than the rigmorale Carbonite had be go through (that did no good).

H had the same problem too … this fixed it in 2 minutes … Carbonite support didn’t suggest this even though I’ve been communicating via email with them for weeks !

Why don’t they have this under their FAQ’s ??!!

Thank you !

Thanks for this solution. I was having the same problem, and also a problem with a game called Iracing that would not update. I didn’t delete everything, only the line that said “0.0.0.0 localhost”, and replaced it with the correct line, and everything worked.

Thanks for finding and sharing this.
